FABRIC
What
was once a Victorian meat cellar is now,
without doubt, at the forefront of London’s
clubbing scene. Mind you, this has been the
case for some time as Fabric was an almost
immediate success.
This
really shouldn’t have come as much of a
surprise to anyone as the place oozes quality,
cool and class from every brick. That may seem
a little over the top, but consider the
amenities therein…
For
a start there’s the 24,000 square feet of
space. That’s not small, not by anyone’s
standards. Included in this space are three
dancefloors – all cunningly shielded from
the others (whether by existing walls or
seriously well-placed partitions) so that
there’s no sonic bleed from one area to
another. Nice. And not that easy to do either
– especially when you’re dealing with the
kooky acoustics readily apparent in a hundred
year-old multi-galleried basement...
Then
there’s the bizarre and fabulous body sonic
dancefloor – an unusual experience for
anyone and the perfect help for the rhythm
free clubber. Put simply, the bass doesn’t
just come from the speakers in this room, it
also comes from the floor. This has more of an
effect than you’d think.
Not
that the sound system really needs any
assistance from anywhere – it is probably
the best this particular writer has ever
heard. Not murky in the slightest, superbly
clear across the entire bass/treble range and,
almost as importantly, mind-stunningly loud.
This
is all without mentioning the absurdly late
license the place has (and that’s something
that can be missing from a lot of clubs in
London) – well, actually it has a 24 hour
license so there’s no need to close at all
really…except that staying open forever
would surely be bad for people’s health.
And,
finally, there’s the fact that, on top of
all the state of the art and superbly thought
out bits of the club, the actual nights Fabric
host are fabulous. Fridays host Fabriclive
– one of the most popular nights in the
capital, featuring (more regularly than anyone
has a right to) the biggest names in hip hop,
scratch, house and techno, whilst Saturdays
tend to have smaller line ups and longer sets
– but still from the cream of the world’s
DJ talent.
In
short, Fabric is just about the best night out
you can find and it’s not that expensive at
all either, something you really wouldn’t
expect. London’s top spot and no mistake.
